The theater itself is split between seats made for dinner and the show and seats that are specifically just for people coming to the show. One there your picture is snapped with your entire party and then you are escorted to your seats. The Lumberjack Feud cast actually helps seat the audience. There is also a concession stand for snacks if you choose just to watch the show.

Danny Black, the ‘world famous lumberjack of the Smokies’, is everyone’s tour guide tonight. Danny really moves the action along while hosting and makes sure everyone keeps up with the goings-on during the show. Black is also extraordinarily witty, a talented juggler and physical comedian to boot. Crowd interaction starts immediately as well as Black wastes no time getting everyone involved, with various people in the crowd being brought to the stage and incorporated in to the show.

You’re introduced to two Smoky Mountain logging families. The show starts off around the inception of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This is a time when logging in the Great Smoky Mountains is beginning to dwindle and the two families are coming to that realization. They can see that they are not going to be logging in the Smokies much longer so a competition is born to decide which family has the best lumberjacks and lumberjills in all the region.

The competition portion is just a treat if you’ve never been to a lumberjack tournament. These are professional lumberjacks that compete in traditional lumberjack sports including: the standing chop, log rolling, cross-cut saw pull, among others. The hot saw is a crowd favorite, and a loud one at that. The saws are ripped, engines warmed up and then they make two of the fastest cuts you will ever see made outside a true lumber yard. Of course, a dinner show put together with lumberjack games isn’t exactly commonplace anyways. Pets even get in on the action with a series of dog games including a long jump into the pool that takes center stage.

The pool’s main attraction is the log rolling competition that ends the evening pitting family against family and determines the winner of the night’s show. You’ll cheer on your family (the audience is divided in two halves to cheer on the different families) as two of the lumberjacks take to the log and began to roll against one another. It’s a feet-flying, water-splashing good time as you wait for someone, anyone, to get put into the drink. It’s a best of three tries competition and the highlight of the show.

Lumberjack Feud

What is going to work is the new Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Show in Pigeon Forge. Why not try top settle our differences with a big ole barn dance while chowin down on some good Southern cookin. Will it be peaceful? Who knows, but at least you’ll get to eat and enjoy some great bluegrass tunes. I guess someone decided it’d be smart to invite both the Hatfields AND the McCoys to the party! These two families mix about about as well as broccoli and chocolate pudding. Needless to say, the new sheriff is going to have his hands full with this group.

Oh, and remember we said a little something about the food, well that’s Granny’s secret plan. Hopefully that will soothe the savage beasts. We’re talking about finger-licking country cookin’ the likes of fried chicken, down-home pulled pork bbq, mashed taters, corn on the cob, slaw and desert if you’re good. Just try to resist some of Granny’s cooking. Granny said it’s just her way of calming the natives. These families, as well as anyone else in attendance, will be too full to do anything but sit back and enjoy the toe tappin’ music we got lined up.

Wild Eagle – Coming to Dollywood, 2012

The area also holds its annual Heritage Days celebration (this year, September 24) where guests can see quilt demonstrations, a petting zoo, kid’s train rides, basket making, a farmers market and much more! You’ll get to experience life in the 18th century first hand as you learn to make such early American staples as lye soap and apple butter. People young and old enjoy Old Mill Heritage Days. It’s a festival not to be missed if you’re in Pigeon Forge.

In addition, the Old Mill Restaurant is one of the best known restaurants on the Tennessee-side of the Smokies. It’s a popular spot for photographs and just watching. This three-story building dominates the middle of town and sits beside the Pigeon River. Part of the charm of the restaurant is in fact its location. You can hear the river bubbling as it passes outside and of course you can walk down and snap a quick picture of the waterfall next to the water-wheel, one of the most photographed sights in the area. And though the location is beautiful, it pales in comparison to the food inside. Most restaurants have a dish that they are famous for, in the case of the Old Mill it is their corn chowder and corn fritters. The chowder is more than a soup it is a meal and the fritters are so good you will keep asking for more.

The shops at the Old Mill are as unique and varied as they come. The Toy Bin that faces Patriot Park carries those toys from by-gone years. Items that you may have grown up with in the 50s, 60s and 70s are back on the shelves and promise to fascinate a new generation. The Candy Kitchen also enjoys nostalgia with everything from Mary Jane’s to wax lips. Of course the main reason for going to the candy shop is their selection of salt water taffy. Every flavor under the sun plus some sugar free options in bins so that you can get the assortment that suits you best. Around the corner from the candy store is the pottery shop. The pieces they offer range from the usable to the beautiful. The salt and pepper shaker bears you will see in the Old Mill restaurant are available for purchase along with many other Smoky Mountains themed objects.

Patriot Park, which is home to many special events throughout the year, is also one of the best walking tracks in the county. Part of the trail follows the shore of the Pigeon River. The park itself is dedicated to the memory of the veterans that served wartime from Sevier County. One of the focal points of this exhibit is a Patriot Missile which of course was made famous during the first Gulf War. Around the track there are also flags from the 50 states and from the various branches of the armed forces. The parking area of Patriot Park is the hub of the Fun Time Trolley that services Pigeon Forge and Sevierville. You can park your car for free and catch a trolley to Dollywood or any point in Pigeon Forge. Whether you are jumping on a trolley headed for Splash Country or going to eat at the Old Mill the patriot park area of Pigeon forge is something to be enjoyed. Make sure you take time to take it in.

What do you get when you cross a science museum and an arcade? If you said “a mess” you’re half right! If you also said “WonderWorks” then you’ve got it! The “mess” is that the building is built to look like it has landed upside down in Pigeon Forge. You simply cannot miss it as it is arguably the most unique building in the Smoky Mountains. WonderWorks is located right beside the Black Bear Jamboree Dinner Show. WonderWorks in Pigeon Forge, TN says it is “Tennessee’s only upside down attraction. An Amusement Park for the Mind, featuring over 150 interactive exhibits. It’s 55,000 sq feet of Family Fun…and don’t miss the most anticipated Dinner Show – Hoot ‘n Holler” according the WonderWorks home page.

This is an extremely entertaining attraction that is well worth every penny. Unlike a dinner show or theater where you have a specific amount of time to enjoy them, the WonderWorks in Tennessee is a go-at-your-own-pace attraction that lets you try out every single exhibit as many times as you want! There are no limits (that I know of) to the amount of times that you can play interact with the exhibits. Wonder Works will honestly keep an entire family of every age entertained for hours! I spent close to two hours going through and trying out everything that I could. I got to feel the winds of a hurricane, experience what an earthquake feels like, ride some bicycle thing that flips you completely upside-down, throw a baseball, design and ride my own virtual roller coaster, lay on a bed of nails, and so much more! WonderWorks is definitely one of the best attractions in Pigeon Forge, TN.

Insider Tips:

• Pick your times. It can get crowded, so choose wisely when you go. The best times are early morning or late after dinner. Try to avoid Fridays and Saturdays if at all possible.

• Watch when you eat. There are rides that spin and flip, so eat either before or after you go depending on which doesn’t make you sick!
• Bring your camera! There are so many photo opportunities at WonderWorks. Take a picture of someone in a spacesuit, on a bed of nails, flying through the air, etc.
• This is a great place for birthday parties, youth group trips, reunions, etc.

The only disappointment that I had with WonderWorks was that some of the exhibits weren’t working. With so many people interacting with them, it’s understandable that some exhibits will tend to take the day off. I tried messing with a computer that could supposedly read my mind by asking me 20 questions, but it wouldn’t even ask the first question…I guess my mind is hard to read! There was also a spaceshuttle simulation on a plasma screen that wasn’t working. I messed with an exhibit that was supposed to show me what I will look like in 20 years, but it simply made me look like I do every morning! With so many things to do, these were easily forgiven. I still give WonderWorks a big 5 star rating simply because of the bang for the buck entertainment. WonderWorks also has the Hoot and Holler Dinner Show, which is a turn-of-the-century vaudeville style dinner show with family-style Italian food. It sounds like a lot of fun with a ton of audience participation.

Leading up to April 15, 2012, when it will have been 100 years since the RMS Titanic was lost, Titanic Museum Attractions in Pigeon Forge, Tn, as well as Branson, Mo., will honor the 2,208 passengers and crew members with an ongoing series of special events, activities and ceremonies.

One of those events includes a tribute/contest involving the birthplace of the RMS Titanic in Ireland. In all, six 11-day trips for two to Belfast, Ireland (where Titanic was constructed) will be given away at the Pigeon Forge and Branson Titanic attractions. Officially titled the “Back to Titanic 100th Year ‘Tour
Ireland’ Sweepstakes” the contest starts June 13, 2011 and contestants can enter daily online at TitanicAttraction.com. Winners will be announced Feb. 14, 2012.

Meanwhile, the Titanic museum itself will offer glimpses into the luxury liner’s past in a one-of-a-kind way by letting guests walk what the hallways, parlors, cabins and Grand Staircase of the Titanic would have been like in its day. These confines also showcase some 400 artifacts pulled directly from the ship and its remains on the ocean floor. Visitors can also touch a real iceberg, put their hands in actual 28-degree water, and try to balance themselves on the sloping decks as they would have been when the ship was sinking.

During 2011 and 2012, Titanic remembrance events are scheduled around the world, Titanic Museum Attractions will be the epicenter of remembrance for passengers and crew. The Titanic Museum Attractions will honor and respect those brave souls who perished in the wreckage with the following events:

• In July, Titanic Museum Attractions will allow every single guest who visits the museum to personally deposit a single rose petal into a container in the Memorial Gallery. On April 15, 2012 – exactly 100 years after the RMS Titanic was lost – each of the rose petals will be carefully laid onto the surface of the Atlantic Ocean directly where the Titanic sank.

• Beginning Aug. 1, 2011, future brides and grooms can enter to win their own “Royal Wedding” in April 2012. Titanic Museum Attractions will pay homage to the 12 honeymooning couples on board the RMS Titanic with its “Royal Wedding” contest. Online voting will select a winning couple to be married on the Titanic Attraction’s $1 million Grand Staircase.

• Many descendants of Titanic passengers and crew members will make appearances at Titanic Museum Attractions throughout 2011 and 2012, including descendants of Second Officer Charles Lightoller, the most senior crew member to survive the Titanic. Lightoller, whose family now lives in Ireland and Scotland, fled the sinking ship in a collapsible life raft and was one of only four officers to survive.

• April’s re-release of James Cameron’s “Titanic” movie in 3D will mark the opening of a new gallery (at both the Pigeon Forge and Branson locations) featuring props and costumes on loan from collectors.

• On April 14 and 15, 2012, the Pigeon Forge and Branson locations will each hold a two-day remembrance event. Both will culminate with a candlelight service and the lighting of an eternal flame which will burn all year in honor of the 2,208 who perished onboard the RMS Titanic.

Throughout the year Titanic Museum Attractions provide a gateway to 1912, where crew members bring the stories of the fabled ship and its fascinating passengers to life in vivid, dramatic detail. The over 400 priceless artifacts displayed throughout the museum shed additional light on the lives of those passengers and crew members onboard the Titanic’s maiden voyage… A collection valued at over four $4.5 million.

The 2,208 people who died in the wreckage are listed on the walls in the Titanic Memorial Room. Guests can match their boarding pass, which lists a passenger’s name, with the pass-holder’s fate there.

And you definitely will not want to miss the Grand Staircase. Constructed from the original Harland & Wolff plans with its oak carvings and cherub statue, the Grand Staircase is a work of art in its own right. Its oak wall paneling and elaborate railings and iron scroll work come alive in the light. Listen carefully to hear what the floor was made of – something considered most expensive for 1912.

A few of the activities guests can enjoy while touring the museum include:

- Simulating loading coal into a burning furnace. Get into an actual size lifeboat. Sending an SOS signal, and tying rope knots.
- Steering a ship.
- For young guests eight and under, there is a special section (Tot-Titanic) devoted to them with various interactive games and stations.
- Stand on the Titanic’s bridge and hear the Captain’s commands.
- Stand on the deck of the ship’s stern and experience the different precise angles of the ship as it gradually descended into the water over a span of 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Dixie Stampede Pre-show

• Arrive 45 minutes before showtime to see the pre-show in the Carriage Room. There is a bluegrass band playing and they serve some fruity, non-alcoholic drinks and peanuts.
• Sit upstairs – The doors that you eventually enter the theater through are upstairs…so get a head start if you’re the type that thinks they won’t have enough food left if you wait. You know who you are!
• The last song is “Rocky Top” so you can start making your way to the red curtain when they start playing it. Just follow the herd (of people).

Dixie Stampede Dinner

• They serve Pepsi, water, coffee, and sweet tea. I’m not sure if their sweet tea is instant or burnt every time I go, but it doesn’t taste “southern”.
• They plop an entire chicken down on your plate with its little legs crossed and all. If that makes you queazy then you’re family will get a kick out of your reaction at least! Just be ready for it.
• If you’re a straw person…bring your own.
• If you’re a silverware person…bring your own…and don’t let anyone see you.

Dixie Stampede Show

• The theater is split into two sides…a North and South side. The whole point of the show is that the two side compete to “settle” the “Civil War” once and for all. The South is seated closer to the exit, so they win in my book!
• The Pigeon Forge Dixie Stampede always has talented riders in their cast that does some amazing tricks. This is arguably the best part of the show.
• If you can overlook the fact that hardly any of the singing is live, you’ll enjoy the show. The Dixie Stampede is more about the animals and the talent riding them anyway. If you are looking for a Pigeon Forge dinner show with live singing then check out the Black Bear Jamboree Dinner Show as I believe they have better vocal talent and better food.
• There is a lot of audience participation, so be ready to clap, stomp your feet, blow flyin’ raspberries, stand up & salute, throw toilet seats, ride horses, race pigs, etc.

So why did I give the Dixie Stampede Dinner Show a 4 star rating? First of all, the show hasn’t changed hardly at all since the Dixie Stampede first opened. The biggest difference I noticed was that it smells a bit more now than it did years ago. You get use to it after a few minutes, but it’s noticeable when you walk in the theater. People knew the jokes and everything before the performers even said them. Heck, I knew them and it had been about 5 years since I’ve gone! Most of the singing isn’t live and it’s too obvious. The last time I went (June 2006) the sweet tea wasn’t good, the chicken was a bit dry, and the pork loin was also a bit dry. Maybe they had a bad night…who knows. If you’ve never been to the Dixie Stampede Dinner Show, practically all of this can be overlooked though. If you’re looking for things to do in Pigeon Forge or places to eat, then the Dixie Stampede is a perfect place for you as it satisfies both. It’s one of the best Pigeon Forge Dinner Shows to visit. Dixie Stampede Dinner Show

Even from the road you will start to see the artifacts and exhibits that are part of the collection. Some of the outdoor exhibits you will encounter are: a Shay Engine, a caboose, setoff houses and a water tower. These items are actually pieces from the early 1900s and were used in the logging industry. The Shay engine is the cornerstone of the exhibit. This type of engine was used by the lumber company to pull the cars of logs back down the mountain to the sawmill and to take the workers back up the mountain to work. The Shay engine was the backbone of the Little River Railroad. For train enthusiasts, this is a must see, as not many of these engines remain. Certainly it is hard to find one as beautifully maintained as this one.After taking a look at the outdoor exhibits, head inside and take a look at the photos and information about the logging industry in the Smokies. The exhibits start with the natural history and the settlers of the Elkmont areas in the Smokies. Then you will learn about the growth of the industry and the types of tracks and locomotives that they people used while logging. One of the most fascinating parts is how inventive and industrious these workers were. From designing new types of rail cars to a swinging bridge for flatcars, you will be amazed to see what they did to make the transportation of the lumber possible. Of course no exhibit of this type should be concluded without including the introduction to the National Park.

The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum is a slice of Americana, mixed with the excitement of hard work and adventure in the Great Smoky Mountains. This museum captures the American spirit that has made this country so great. You get to learn about the Park and how the land was used before the Park was founded. Take some pictures with a piece of history outside, read about the logging industry of the early 1900s or just soak up the feel of the people that called the mountains home; either way you are going to have a remarkable experience.

Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum

The following recipe was posted on recipezaar.com and has gotten rave reviews as to how much it tastes just like Dixie Stampede’s creamy vegetable soup. It takes about 15 minutes to make with about 5 minutes to prepare. Also, if you enjoy Dixie Stampede’s food or the food at Dollywood, take a look at Dolly Parton’s book of recipes called Dolly’s Dixie Fixin’s, which is full of some southern cookin’ treats.

So here ya go…the famous Dixie Stampede Cream of Vegetable Soup recipe!

Ingredients
* 3 tablespoons margarine (Some use salted butter)
* 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
* 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
* 1 teaspoon corn syrup
* 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
* 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 cup chicken broth
* 1 1/2 cups water
* 3/4 cup finely chopped cooked vegetable (Some people use diced canned potatoes and canned carrot slices diced very small, Veg-All will work)
* 1 pint half-and-half cream (Some people use a heavy cream for a richer taste)
* chopped fresh parsley

Directions
1. In a 3-quart sauce pot, melt margarine. Add onion, garlic, and corn syrup. Simmer 1 minute. Do NOT brown.
2. Add flour, white pepper, salt, chicken broth, water, and vegetables. Simmer 3 minutes.
3. Add half-and-half. Simmer until desired consistency. Stir constantly – do NOT bring to boil.
4. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve.
