Dollywood Nights

Dollywood Nights is back again this year as the park looks to close out summer with extended hours from July 30 to August 12.

Dollywood is bringing back the popular “Dollywood Nights” again this year – the annual end of summer celebration in which the park stays open through the evening hours so everyone can get their fill of rides, park food, and shows before settling in for the new school year.

For over one week, from July 30 to August 12, 2012, Dollywood in Pigeon Forge will operate on extended hours till 10 p.m. each evening. Each day, Dollywood will open at 10 a.m. during the Dollywood Nights celebration (except Saturday when the park opens at 9 a.m.) Most rides will operate during the extended hours. Aside from the evening hours during the park’s wintertime Smoky Mountain Christmas festival, Dollywood Nights offers a rare occasion to enjoy Dollywood’s rides, including the award-winning coasters Thunderhead, Mystery Mine and the new Barnstormer thrill ride — in the dark.

“Before school starts and everyone gets back into their routines, we thought Dollywood Nights would be a great time for families to visit Dollywood after work and enjoy the lazy dog days—and nights—of summer in the park,” said Barbara Joines, Dollywood Vice President and General Manager.

A special $25 (plus tax; no discounts apply) admission ticket will be offered exclusively for July 30 to August 12 which provides entry into Dollywood at 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Dollywood season passes and valid park admission tickets will entitle ticketholders to the extended hours as well.

The number one ticketed attraction in Tennessee, Dollywood is an award-winning 150-acre family adventure park located in Pigeon Forge near the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Open nine months a year, Dollywood hosts four of the South’s largest festivals and offers more than 40 rides and attractions, including the new Barnstormer, Thunderhead, twice named the world’s No. 1 wooden coaster, and Mystery Mine coaster, Theme Park Insider’s 2007 Best New Attraction.

In addition to the 2009 Golden Ticket Award for Best Shows, Dollywood is the recipient of 15 Big E Awards in recognition of the park’s live entertainment which features country, bluegrass, gospel and Appalachian music. The Golden Tickets’ 2007 Publisher’s Pick for best theme park, Dollywood also is a two-time winner of the Golden Ticket Award for Best Christmas Event. In addition, a dozen crafters authentic to the East Tennessee region demonstrate daily. For more information, visit www.dollywood.com. Dollywood’s operating days and hours vary. Lumberjack Feud to Host STIHL Timbersports Championships

The Lumberjack Feud in Pigeon Forge will host the STIHL Timbersports championships June 1-3.

The Lumberjack Feud in Pigeon Forge is well known for its performers and their log-cutting expertise. In June, the competition jumps up a notch as the Feud hosts the STIHL® Timbersports® Series US and Collegiate Championships from June 1-3. You can expect sawdust in the air and logs splitting at a high rate of speed as the Feud transforms from a show to a high stakes competition.

The event is being picked up by such national cable outlets as ESPNU, Outdoor Channel and TUFF TV. Tickets to see the event in person can be purchased at the Lumberjack Feud box office or online at LumberjackFeud.com.

“We’re thrilled to host the STIHL Timbersports Series Pro and Collegiate U.S. Championships,” said Rob Scheer, owner and president of the Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud in a release. “Since many of our lumberjack performers have also competed in the STIHL Timbersports Series, this opportunity promises to provide fans with a double dose of lumberjack excitement and entertainment.”

Since putting on its first show featuring tree climbing, log rolling, dog jumping, and wood carving events, the Lumberjack Feud has entertained and “wowed” visitors from all corners of the country coming to Pigeon Forge and the Great Smoky Mountains to see their world-champion lumberjack athletes. The legacy of the American logger is not lost on the Feud with its action-packed show, carving and climbing competitions, and comedy interludes. “Saddle-Up!” Western Festival Gears Up for 12th Annual Pigeon Forge Event

Annual event has been listed in American Cowboy Magazine’s list of the “Top 101 Western Events.”

In what has become a staple of Pigeon Forge’s Winterfest (Feb. 23-26), the western-themed “Saddle-Up!” festival will again ride into town this February to a cowboy-lover’s delight.

The four-day festival includes a variety of entertainment, presented the cowboy way, from cowboy poets to concerts by Western musicians.

The Saddle Cats are back for another go-round at Pigeon Forge’s 12th Annual Saddle-Up festival.

“It’s become a really big western-themed event,” said Lila Wilson, Pigeon Forge special events coordinator. “People who grew up watching old western shows and movies seem to really be drawn to the festival, which is now in its tenth year.”

From genuine chuckwagons from the Southeast and beyond at the annual chuckwagon cookoff to Western swing dances, there looks to be something for the Western enthusiast in all of us.

“It’s not that one event is more popular than the next, they’re all pretty popular,” Wilson said. “We bring in the cowboy poets, the western artists and then we wrap up the weekend with a Sunday morning chuckwagon breakfast followed by cowboy church. The chuckwagon cook off is always a big event because each entrant in the cook off competes for prizes.”

With last year’s festival drawing upwards of 2,000 people, Wilson believes Pigeon Forge is likely to see  around the same number of visitors this year.

“People love it, they just love it,” she said. “It’s a niche event and people who are into the old west really turn out for it. It’s an opportunity for people who have fond memories of days gone by when they were kids growing up watching those western shows and reading about cowboys. The excitement is there and we expect a great weekend this year.”

AdventureCon – Tennessee’s Largest Pop Culture Collectors Show

Pigeon Forge’s first annual AdventureCon wraps at the Grand Resort Hotel and Convention Center

hyomesetup11Quite simply, if you were in Pigeon Forge during the last week of May, you may have caught a glimpse of a Jedi, or maybe even a Ghostbuster, or any of a myriad of characters one might recognize from their childhood.

The thing is, these characters have a way of hanging onto to people well past their childhood, which is why events like AdventureCon are so popular today.

The 3-day event, which had previously been held in Knoxville, kicked off the summer season at the Grand Resort Hotel and Convention Center in Pigeon Forge this past weekend and from the looks of the dealers and fans alike, the event was a rousing success.

Buoyed by an appearance from Billy Dee Williams – most well-known for his portrayal of Lando Calrissian in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, the event’s lines stretched throughout the convention center for a glimpse at stars like Williams; Jake Lloyd, who played a young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace; wrestlers Ted DiBiase, a.k.a. “The Million Dollar Man” and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, as well as model Angie Everhart.

Many of the stars like Lloyd and Williams even took part in question and answer sessions where fans got up close and personal with the actors and where musings from the Star Wars movie series were expounded upon at length and questions about their own lives were answered as well.

On the dealer end, it was a weekend of meeting new buyers and developing relationships that sometimes only take place in these types of settings.

For Brian Pritchard, who boasted a collection made up of toys ranging from He-Man action figures to Transformers, it’s become a life’s work.

“This is just stuff that I’ve accumulated over the years from estate sales, yard sales, coming across stuff on the internet – just a variety of places,” said Pritchard, whose company Galaxy of Junk (galaxyofjunk@yahoo.com) buys, sells and trades comics and toys.

Some of the more interesting toys seen throughout Pritchard’s display included a He-Man Castle Grayskull in it’s original packaged state, a complete Transformers Constructicons set and a William “Refrigerator” Perry G.I. Joe pose-able action figure.

Just around the corner from the Galaxy of Junk display, Talon Dunning was working on a new sketch.

Dunning was one of the many illustrators in attendance over the weekend at AdventureCon, his specialty was primarily roleplaying illustration.

“Mainly fantasy/super hero art, roleplaying art,” said Dunning, whose talents can be seen at www.talonart.com. “I’ve been doing it my whole life, that and graphic design, so it’s something I really enjoy… Right now, I’m just doing freelance work.”

Others, like local University of Tennessee graduate Shawn Harbin were on hand to answer questions about their work and sell a few comics as well. According to Harbin, The Dungeon Comic tells a story that contains elements of horror, mystery, sci-fi, suspense, fantasy, and camp. Harbin’s work can be seen at www.bsx22studios.com.

Aside form those mentioned, booths featuring games like the popular Dungeons & Dragons series, knives & swords, Anime toys and books, tattoos, and signed movie posters were prevalent throughout the event – one that looks to become a spring staple in Pigeon Forge after a successful first go round at the Grand Resort Hotel and Convention Center.

Titanic Museum to Open in Pigeon Forge on April 8

Half-scale museum will house 400 valuable artifacts and personal items found on the ship.

The world’s largest permanent Titanic museum is set to officially open its doors in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee on Thursday, April 8.

According to the museum’s official website, www.titanicpigeonforge.com, guests will get to play a part in one of the greatest human dramas of all time as they navigate through 20 rooms holding over 400 valuable artifacts and personal items, an exclusive photo collection and hands-on-activities.

Some of the activities include:

  • Walking an actual size replica of the Grand Staircase

  • Touching the frozen surface of an “iceberg”

  • Sending an SOS signal from the ship’s wireless communications room and receive communication from the coast guard

  • Listening to survivors’ stories as they sit in actual lifeboats

  • Feeling the chill of that fateful “Starry Night”

  • Standing on the mighty ship’s bridge and hear the Captain’s commands

  • Viewing life aboard the ship – see a First Class Stateroom and a Third Class cabin

  • Exploring world-class gallery rooms with rare historical artifacts

  • Controlling a simulated underwater Titanic exploration of your own

Guests will be given a passenger boarding ticket upon entry. These tickets tell the story of an actual Titanic passenger and allow you to follow their story throughout the exhibit. Each artifact has a unique story that relates directly to a crew member or passenger. At the end of your two-hour self-guided tour, you will discover the fate of your ticketed passenger in the memorial room.

Titanic in the Smokies is a permanent three-story, $25 million museum attraction shaped like the Titanic herself. Built half-scale to the original Titanic, the museum towers 100 feet above the parkway and is anchored in water to create the illusion of the Titanic at sea.

A free Titanic Museum preview center is currently open daily at 2134 Parkway in Pigeon Forge.

Parker’s Greatest Knife Show

This show has kept its popularity due to the work of the late Jim Parker, part of the original Parker Knife family.

Parker’s Greatest Knife Show is the greatest antique pocket knife show in the country. On June 11th through 13th the knife show will be at The Sevierville Events Center at Bridgemont. This is the brand-new, state-of-the-art events center located right off Highway 66 in Sevierville TN. You can see it from the road, look for the Music Outlet and then pull across the bridge to the events center. This astounding facility only makes the knife show that much better. Countless vendors and knives as far as the eye can see. Plus, you get the chance to meet and talk to other knife collectors from around the region and across the country.

The knife community is one of the greatest set of collectors on the planet. They are informed about their collectibles and look forward to talking with others about their passion. Whether they are collecting pocket knives or fixed blades, WR Case or Boker you will find some amazing collectibles and learn a lot about the history of the knife industry. Some of the vendors you will meet have been collecting knives since they were children getting their first knife from a parent or grandparent. These vendors will have one-of-kind pieces or knives that were limited production runs. The history of the knives that you will see will amaze you.

This show has kept its popularity due to the work of the late Jim Parker, part of the original Parker Knife family. This show has been around for 18 years and has grown considerably. The Parker name is known in the knife world and they are part of the history of America for that reason. From owning their own knife company to selling and trading the biggest brands in the knife world, this is the show to experience. Even if you are not a knife collector you will enjoy the greatest knife show on earth! If you are in the Pigeon Forge area in June, set aside some time for this special event.
