Christmas in the Smokies Bluegrass Festival

If you love bluegrass music, and who doesn’t, you’ll want to be in Pigeon Forge during the second week of December for the Christmas in the Smokies Bluegrass Festival. It’s a mixture of two very popular reasons people flock to the area every year: Christmas and bluegrass.

Special guest Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver headline the 2012 Christmas in the Smokies Festival, December 12-15 at the Ramada Inn & Smoky Mountain Convention Center in Pigeon Forge. Not only that, but festival-goers will get to take part in instrument workshops for $25 per class. To start the week out, Wednesday will feature workshops, square dancing, jamming and a free concert.

As mentioned, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver is renowned in the musical world. Their instrumentation and harmonies are second to none. Their old gospel sound takes you back to yesteryear and makes you feel like you’re in one of those old country churches clapping your hands and tapping your feet. Combine that with a powerful presentation and you’ve got one heck of a headliner for the Thursday, December 13 show.

The great bluegrass music doesn’t stop there, Marty Raybon, former frontman for the band Shenandoah, will leave people in awe this Christmas with his amazing bluegrass vocals. The Raybons band’s traditional tenor sound will be on full display during their Saturday night concert December 15th.

Headlining the Thursday and Saturday night festival slots will be Goldwing Express. Their shows have gained them notoriety in the United States and Canada as well. Not only do they harken back to their Native American heritage, Goldwing Express will mix it up with country, gospel and comedy performances during their show. It’s one that definitely should not be missed.

Also appearing on Saturday night, and Friday as well, is Bobby Osborne & The Rocky Top X-press. Osborne is widely known for his talents on the mandolin and his hit song “Rocky Top” is especially well-regarded in these parts.

In all, the festival will feature 15 talented bluegrass artists including: Carolina Road, Your Host Band; Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Marty Raybon, Goldwing Express, Ralph Stanley II, Bobby Osborne & Rocky Top X-Press, Gary Waldrep Band, Jerry Butler & The Blu-J’s, Remington, Ryde, Bluegrass Mountaineers, The Larkins, Reno Tradition, Mountain Faith, Hart Brothers and Bluegrass Gentleman.

Saturdays in December = Snow at the Titanic

Calling it “Real Snow off the Bow,” the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge has taken it upon themselves to turn the area into a winter wonderland whether it snows or not this December. At least on Saturdays.

As a part of Titanic’s Christmas in a Winter Wonderland, the popular Pigeon Forge attraction is creating their own snow starting November 22-24 and every Saturday in December – 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, beginning at 7pm. And there is no need to worry about money, it’s FREE and there will also be FREE parking. Just remember to bring your camera!

So if you’re wondering if it will snow this year in Pigeon Forge, the answer is “YES”. Pigeon Forge’s Titanic Museum Attraction even guarantees it. We’re talking real snow here. Yes, REAL snow. The snow is just a part of the Titanic museum’s “Christmas in a Winter Wonderland,” dedicated to honoring the memories and celebrating the lives of the 2,208 passengers and crew who lost their lives aboard the Titanic.

Every Saturday in December, the Titanic will produce real, falling snow off the ship’s bow. Not only that, the entire ship will be adorned in Christmas lights and decorations, so pack a camera, camcorder, have your smartphone ready because it’s going to be an amazing night you won’t want to forget.

“Everything about our Christmas in a Winter Wonderland Celebration is aimed at giving our visitors and their families a unique, memorable holiday experience,” said officials with the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge. “A memory that will last forever – and isn’t that what Christmas is all about?”

A Busy Thanksgiving in Pigeon Forge

If you were out and about in town on Black Friday or over the weekend, you likely heard an array of sounds that went some thing like this: “Cha-ching”!

Pigeon Forge enjoyed quite a busy Thanksgiving weekend in the retail department as businesses saw long lines and packed stores throughout the long weekend for most. But that wasn’t all, hotels, cabin rentals, and restaurants also felt the rush of tourists and tourist dollars this past holiday weekend. Many local restaurants were on an hour wait as shoppers rushed to get in a quick meal before hitting the shops again.

Officials with the Applewood Farmhouse Grill even served turkey to its guests on Thanksgiving – enough to account for almost half a ton of popular Thanksgiving white meat. In all, the Farmhouse and its neighboring Grill reported to having served around 4,000 people over the weekend.

Whether it was the wait at area restaurants, the booked cabins and hotels, or the long lines at store cash registers, this was a shopping season to remember in Pigeon Forge. Experts expect that it will continue through December.

According to a recent study done by the University of Tennessee, more tourism dollars are expected to be spent in the area this year as compared to last year following a good start to 2012. The study showed that Sevier County’s hotel earnings jumped 8.4 percent during the first three quarters of the year as compared to the first three quarters of 2011. With the busy holiday season in full swing don’t expect those numbers to drop off.

Lost among the long lines, large brand-marked bags, and weary feet, was Titanic Museum attraction’s Thanksgiving fireworks celebration. It was a great way to close out the holiday weekend and looks to be cementing itself as a new Pigeon Forge tradition. The 100th anniversary celebration of the Titanic’s journey was accompanied by a number of well-known Christmas carols, as well as machine-made snow, and was said to honor the 2,208 passengers that died aboard the Titanic that fateful night.

Mellow Mushroom

As far as pizza places go in Pigeon Forge, the Mellow Mushroom is at the top of the list. From pizzas to calzones to buffalo wings, there’s something to calm the appetite in all of us.

But what about before you bite into that huge slice of pepperoni or sausage pizza? Mellow Mushroom’s appetizer list is a meal in and of itself for some people. Just looking through the starters, oven baked chicken wings, pretzels, meatballs, spinach artichoke dip, muffuletta cheese bread, and bruschetta all stand out. Personally, you can’t go wrong with either the bruschetta or pretzels.

If a healthier lunch is more to your liking, Mellow Mushroom’s various salads are your ticket to ride. They’re big and you can even build your own if you’d like.

On to the meat of the menu, literally. The pizza section is realistically where everyone’s eyes go once they’ve positioned themselves accordingly inside Mellow Mushroom. These aren’t your everyday Pizza Hut pizzas either, they take a bit getting used to. The Holy Shiitake Pie jumps off the menu immediately if not for name alone. It’s blend of Shiitake, Button, and Portobello mushrooms on an olive oil and garlic base tells you you’re that much closer to Italy if not minutes away. Others like the Buffalo Chicken pizza and the Kosmic Marma, which is a red suace based pizza with fresh tomatoes with spinach and feta. The Funky Q Chicken includes BBQ chicken, BBQ sauce, Applewood smoked bacon, mozzarella, and cheddar cheeses. They’re all mouth-watering and will leave you craving for lunch or dinner.

Now, we know how good those pizzas are, but don’t make your final decision before taking a glance at the the calzones and hoagies. Choose from cheese, house, chicken and cheese calzones. On the deli hoagies side, Mellow Mushroom offers turkey and cheese, avocado, Italian, mushroom club. On the grilled hoagies side, steak and cheese, portobello and cheese, meatball, and tofu are among the many grilled subs on the menu.

And if you’ll  be by the bar that night, Mellow Mushroom has a great selection of draft and bottled beers. Next time you’re in Pigeon Forge, stop by and pick up a pie or stay awhile for a drink, a calzone and some wings. You won’t leave hungry from the Mellow Mushroom, but you will leave mighty happy.

Well, while you can’t supplant the Music City in the Smokies you can definitely see a few of the great shows that Nashville is known for. One place to see those shows is the new Smoky Mountain Opry, located on the parkway in the former Miracle Theater location.

The Smoky Mountain Opry boasts a completely renovated stage area that really sets off the atmosphere of the theater. Compared to most, it’s an eye-popping . The new band cart alone has over 10,000 LED lights on it that move and change color! There are also two new “step-out” sections on each side of the stage where the performers will actually be above the audience. Add the new laser light systems to the flying rigs, surround sound and digital projection system and this show is amazing!

The Smoky Mountain Opry is the biggest production show in the area and features music from the 1940’s through today. And it is not just country! We will feature all different styles of music with tributes to the Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Sinatra, Elvis and Michael Jackson (we saw some “Thriller” costumes!), and music from such greats as Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles and Janis Joplin. Classic rock and roll, oldies, disco, gospel, as well as old country, new country and a foot-stomping patriotic segment round out the show. There really is something here for everybody!

Mama’s Farmhouse in Pigeon Forge offers southern food like your mama used to make.

Sometimes, no matter where you find yourself, you just want a little home cookin’ – cookin’ only the way your mom or grandmother could do it. For southerners, it’s biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beens, fruit cobbler…. Those types of things.

Well, Pigeon Forge has come through again, this time in the form of Mama’s Farmhouse, a southern cookin’ family restaurant that would leave even a gourmet’s mouth watering at the sight of Mama’s sweet potato pancakes or fried fish. Those, as well as many other southern staples like country fried steak, pinto beans, cornbread, fried okra, and banana pudding can be found on the menu at Mama’s Farmhouse, 208 Pickel Street, in Pigeon Forge.

But don’t just come for lunch and dinner, Mama’s has all the breakfast helpings you can handle, and kids age 5 & under eat for FREE! Group and tour bus prices are available as well.

At Mama’s, their mission is to be the best at what they do while making Mama proud. Don’t take our word for it, take theirs:

“Our mission is to be the restaurant of choice because we have honored the legacy of ‘Mama’. We will strive to exceed our guests’ expectations and provide a warm, pleasing dining experience just as Mama once did for her family. To achieve this end, we must hold ourselves to the highest possible standards of excellence for service and food. We will dedicate ourselves to these values and principles. We will be committed to developing leadership skills and to encouraging empowerment of our employees, just like Mama raised her kids. We will embrace the challenge of constant self-evaluation to improve our performance as both the restaurant and employer of choice. Our goal is simple:
TO BE THE BEST AT WHAT WE DO.”
